Willapa Bay in Washington produces more oysters than any other estuary in the US. To prevent spawning, sterile oysters are now cultured by crossbreeding tetraploid and diploid oysters. Large beds of edible oysters are also found in Japan and Australia. Common oyster predators include crabsseabirdsstarfishand humans. Inexperienced shuckers can apply too much force, which can result in injury if the blade slips.
